I am super stoked about the uncharacteristic split-second decision that I just made. I WILL travel by freighter. I have been mulling over the significance of the speed of travel for some time now. The extended time that it took to travel to a destination in relatively recent history made the destination itself so much more significant. Our world is shrinking. I, for one, am losing site of how large our world really is.

I'm sure my image of traveling via ship to "the new world" is disgustingly over romanticized. Thankfully I won't be in for an unwelcome shock. Travel by freighter looks a like a practical middle ground between the malnurishment of the desperate months-long boat travels of yesteryear and the unappealing ride of overly 'entertaining' cruise ships.
